Avocado Green Mattress

Why We Like It

The Avocado Green Mattress is perhaps the top choice for consumers who prioritize making environmentally responsible purchases. Avocado entered the mattress industry in 2016 with the goal of creating a bed that was made from organic and sustainable materials at a price point most consumers can afford. There are no polyurethane foams or toxic fire retardants and no worries about off-gassing. Avocado constructs its flagship hybrid mattress out of organic latex foam, organic cotton, and organic wool, along with a top-of-the-line innerspring system for maximized comfort. The mattress is needle-tufted in up to 32 locations, which means that the layers are bound together without the use of toxic solvents or adhesives. The mattress is firm but still delivers exceptional comfort and support.

Pros
  • America's best rated certified organic mattress
  • No polyurethane foams or toxic fire retardants.
  • Made with natural and organic materials, including certified organic cotton, certified organic latex and certified organic wool from a farmers' society co-owned by Avocado.
  • Zoned, pressure-point support system for proper back support and extended durability.
  • 25 year warranty and 1 year free trial.
  • Great edge support

Cons

  • Price may be too expensive for some but if you follow Avocado promotions you may be able get a discount. For many consumers the price is secondary to the environmentally friendly materials with which the mattress was constructed.
  • The mattress may be too firm for some consumers. Avocado is very clear that their mattress was designed this way on purpose and sets expectations that it can take a time to get used to. If your worried about the firmness go with the pillowtop option.

Materials

Avocado Green - 100% GOTS Certified Organic Cotton

Avocado Green Mattress's most appealing features are the materials from which it is made. We'll focus on each material in the top four layers moving from top to bottom.

100% GOTS-certified organic cotton - The exterior top cover of the mattress is made with premium, 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton. We found the button-tufted mattress cover to be very soft and breathable. It sleeps cool and wicks away moisture.

100% GOTS-certified organic wool - One layer down, we find the 100% GOTS-certified organic wool, which is ethically sourced from a collective in India. Wool is naturally breathable down to the fiber level. While synthetics only breathe through pores in between the fibers in the fabric, wool fibers naturally allow air to flow. Thin fibers allow tiny air pockets in the fabric to trap your body heat, which provides superb insulation. As moisture evaporates on hot days, the air in these pockets cools and keeps you feeling comfortable. The breathability of wool will not feel clammy when you sweat and will prevent you from overheating. Wool fibers wick moisture away from your skin which is then released from the fabric through evaporation. Organic wool products are highly odor resistant due to natural, anti-microbial properties that don’t allow bacteria to adhere to the fabric and multiply.

GOLS-certified organic latex rubber foam - The third layer of the Avocado Green Mattress features the GOLS-certified organic latex rubber foam. Natural latex mattresses have several great attributes. First, natural latex allows for better airflow and doesn’t sleep as hot as memory foam. Second, latex is quick to spring back to its original shape. Third, latex is known for its durability. That's why Avocado can confidently off a 25-year warranty. Last, Natural latex is made from real natural rubber, which is harvested from rubber trees. Since natural latex is a plant-based material, it will break down more quickly than synthetic materials in a landfill.

1,438 Coils & 5 zones - The fourth layer of the mattress features what Avocado calls "the most durable and supportive innerspring unit available in any mattress, anywhere." Avocado's innerspring system features up to a little over 1400 individually tuned steel coils. There are three different gauges that are arranged in five ergonomic zones. The innerspring coil system helps to reduce motion transfer, encourages neutral spinal alignment, and contours your body.

Spinal Alignment

Side Sleeping - 115 pounds & 200 pounds: According to their own website, the Avocado Mattress is ideal for back sleepers and stomach sleepers. We had two of our team members test the mattress - a 200-pound male and a 115-pound female. We found during our testing that the Avocado Mattress is a relatively firm mattress, true to its description on Avocado's own website. Both testers were a bit apprehensive about testing a mattress described to be medium-firm but found that it offered great support, contouring, leveling, and spinal alignment. Both testers admit that they tend to prefer softer mattresses but after multiple nights sleeping on the mattress, the testers reported that they slept very comfortably and did not struggle to find a good position whether side, stomach, or back sleeping. Our male tester shared that after several nights on the mattress, he started to prefer the firmness. Both testers reported that their backs felt great after sleeping on the Avocado Green for several nights; neither had any aches or pains to report. The photo below shows good spinal alignment, which would have been even better with a thinner pillow.

Edge support

Side Sitting - 115 pounds: Having tested many mattresses, we are familiar with sitting on the edge of the bed and feeling as though the edge is going to collapse and drop us to the floor. We would refer to that as poor edge support. Thankfully the Avocado Green Mattress offers excellent edge support. The Avocado Green Mattress is constructed with a very durable and supportive innerspring system. It features up to 1,438 individually tuned, tempered steel coils in three gauges and is arranged in 5 distinct ergonomic zones. The mattress also has a fully reinforced steel perimeter for support all the way to the edge - hence the excellent edge support.

Cooling

Our female tester, Jacki, is admittedly a hot sleeper. During the summer months, Jacki often sleeps with two fans on and still has to kick off the sheets in the middle of the night to avoid getting hot and sweaty. We found that the Avocado Green Mattress tends to be cooler to the touch than many other mattresses we have tested. This is due to the organic cotton exterior as well as the organic wool layer beneath.  The organic wool wicks away moisture, which helps you to stay dry and cool even when it's hot outside. In addition, the organic latex foam in the Avocado Green Mattress does a much better job of dissipating heat than traditional memory foam mattresses.

We tested the mattress's heat dissipation by placing a heating pad on the mattress and covering it with a pillow for half an hour to trap and accumulate heat. After half an hour, we quickly removed the pillow and heating pad and set them aside. We immediately recorded the initial temperature with a laser temperature sensor and continued taking readings every 30 seconds for 3 minutes. We repeated the test three times. We created a fourth data set which is the average of the three recorded temperatures at each time interval. We then created a linear trend line based on the average temperature. A linear trend line doesn't fit the data perfectly, but it is easy to interpret and compare to other mattresses we will test. The formula for the average temperature trend line shows that the Avocado Green Mattress dissipates about 10 degrees of heat per minute under this specific test. The results of the heat temperature dissipation test are in the chart below.
