Nolah Evolution: One of the Highest-Rated Mattresses

The Nolah Evolution 15" mattress is one of our favorite mattresses ever. It's Nolah's best seller and their premium luxury hybrid. We're not surprised at how many reputable organizations have raved about it in 2023:

  • Sleep Foundation - "Best Mattress" and "Best Mattress for Back Pain"
  • Sleep Advisor - "Best Mattress" and "Best Mattress for Back Pain"
  • Sleepopolis - "Best Soft Mattress for Side Sleepers" and "Best Hybrid Mattress"
  • Sleep Doctor - "Best Split King Mattress"
  • Mattress Clarity - "Best Mattress for Back Pain"
  • Mattress Nerd - "Best Luxury Mattress" and "Best Hybrid Mattress"
  • Healthline - "Best Pillow Top Mattress for Hot Sleepers"
  • U.S. News & World Report - "Best Mattress" and "Best Mattress for Heavy Sleepers"
  • Forbes - "Best Cooling Mattress for Spinal Alignment"
  • Good Morning America - "Best Mattress for Back Pain"

And after testing the mattress for a few weeks, add Start Sleeping to the list of raving fans. We will be rating this mattress for "Best Mattress for Side Sleepers," "Best Soft Mattress," "Best Hybrid Mattress," and "Best Mattress for Back Pain." It's a runner-up for the best-cooling mattress, though no mattress can compete with Eight Sleep's technology for cooling. We love this mattress and this is why:

Pros

  • There are three firmness levels: plush, luxury firm, and firm. The plush is the softest we've tested and as a person who occasionally deals with low back and upper back pain, this mattress is incredible.
  • They offer a Comfort+ option for people over 300 lbs.
  • The mattress is 15" thick, giving them much room for comfort and support.
  • The hybrid design includes a heat-dissipating quilted Euro Topper with graphite-infused AirFoamICE™ with HDMax™ Tri-Zone™ coils and ArticTex™ cover.
  • Includes 2" AirBreath™ heat gusset for cooling.
  • The topper does an excellent job cooling in combination with coils, allowing space in the mattress for heat to escape (which foam mattresses don't do).
  • The reinforced edges give excellent edge support, so you don't slide off the edge of the bed. Usually, soft mattresses are weak at the edges.
  • Made with organic cotton.
  • Made in the U.S.A.
  • It can be used on any flat surface (bed frame, box spring, slats, or adjustable base). As it's 15", you won't want to pair it with a tall base as it will be more difficult for short people to get into bed.
  • We received two Nolah Squishy pillows with our delivery.
  • Set up was simple, and the acclimation process took less than 20 seconds. Most mattresses need a few hours to get to their full size once out of the vacuum-sealed package.
  • Nolah offers a lifetime warranty and 120-night money-back guarantee. If you don't like the mattress, they will send a driver to pick it up and deliver it to a local charity.

Cons

  • It's on the higher-end for price.
  • Because it's 15", it will be tall if the platform/base you're putting it on is tall.

Delivery and Unboxing

FedEx delivered our mattress, and the delivery was a series of errors, which is no fault of Nolah. Nolah did a great job communicating with us about the delivery dates. FedEx, however, messaged me that they tried to deliver the mattress on a Friday at 2:30 in the afternoon, and I was in my office watching out the window all afternoon as I worked, and no one showed. FedEx then said that they would try the next day. The next day they said that there was an issue and they wouldn't be delivering that day (Saturday), but Sunday. But Saturday afternoon a driver showed up and delivered three boxes that were addressed to someone with an Indian name who lived on a completely different street. I told the driver that a mattress doesn't come in 3 small boxes and he motioned me to sign for the package. I realized that he didn't speak English and I explained it in Spanish and he apologized. The next day we got the mattress in a box, and it looked like it went through a three-round MMA fight.

Though FedEx apparently treated the Nolah mattress box like a soccer ball, the mattress was in perfect condition as Nolah did an excellent job protecting it in a thick, vacuum-wrapped plastic.

The mattress is folded in half in its shrink wrap. Once I punctured the plastic with scissors, the mattress inflated almost immediately! I've never seen that before. There was a hissing sound for 10 or 15 seconds, and the mattress was full size, so make sure you cut the plastic open with space for the bed to open to its full size.

Foam mattresses generally require a few hours to "inflate" to their full size.

The box includes a black envelope with directions, stickers, a coupon for Nolah sheets, and an infographic describing the mattress. The welcome packet is good-looking, uncomplicated, welcoming, and well-designed. As I've interacted with Nolah several times, all of my interactions tell me that they've paid attention to all the details to make working with them easy and enjoyable.

You may notice that the height of the bed is too high. We have an adjustable base that's 15" tall, putting the mattress 30" from the floor, which is difficult for my 5'3" wife to get into bed. We've discussed putting a trampoline beside the bed to help her get into bed.

We don't recommend trampolines to get into bed; that was a joke. We will review a few adjustable bed frames and make a recommendation soon. Right now, we're leaning towards FlexiSpot's S4 adjustable base, as you can modify the height with connectors to be 3". 6", 9", or 12".

Euro Mattress Topper - Soft and Cooling

This mattress has a Euro topper, as opposed to a pillow-top. Euro toppers are sewn flush with the edge of the mattress, and pillow-tops are sewn to the top of the mattress, so pillow tops look more rounded, while the Euro tops look more level and neat.

Euro tops are usually firmer, but the plush mattress that we reviewed is extremely soft.

The excellent cooling ability is due to the design with three cooling components:

  1. ArticTex™ cover
  2. Graphite-infused AirFoamICE™ AirFoam™
  3. Includes 2" AirBreath™ heat gusset for cooling

The 8" coils also play a role in cooling, which we'll discuss below.

Excellent Edge Support

Most foam mattresses have poor edge support. When you first get a foam mattress, you may notice it, but over time, the edge of the mattress will slope even more, making you feel like you're going to slide off your bed.

Swen Euro topper topper that gives excellent support

Because the Euro topper has a sewn top that lines up with the edge of the mattress, this mattress has excellent edge support.

The 8" coils that are near the bottom of the mattress are reinforced around the edges, which gives even better edge support.

Several Layers for Comfort and Support

The mattress has seven layers to achieve a balance of comfort and support. Below the top three layers of the organic cotton ArticTex™ cover, the Euro topper, and the AirBreath™Heat Escape Gusset, there's:

  • 2" layer of AirFoamIce™ for cooling.
  • 2" of high-density foam for support.
  • 1"  of an even higher-density foam that's stronger than latex for support.
  • 8" HDMax Tri-Zone™ coils, including reinforced coils around the edges to give edge support.
  • The coils sit on a recycled plant fiber foundation layer to give stability and durability.

CertiPUR-US Certified Foam

The foam is free from ozone depleters, mercury, lead, and other heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates, and it has low volatile organic compounds, which are emissions affecting indoor air quality.

Spinal Alignment

Hybrid mattresses tend to do well with keeping your spine in a neutral position. This is especially important for those who suffer from back pain. The Nolah Evolution 15 does an above-average job of keeping the spine in a neutral position as it was designed with multiple layers of different density foams as well as coils, with foam being softer and more comfortable and coils giving support. For this reason, it has received awards related to spine alignment and back pain from Sleep Advisor, Mattress Clarity, Forbes, and Good Morning America. It will be our top choice for "Best Mattress for Back Pain."

Motion Isolation

Softer mattresses are better for motion isolation. As this mattress is available in 3 firmness levels, keep in mind that the plush will be the best for not feeling your partner's movement; the luxury firm will be second best, and the firm will be the least effective.

As we tested the plush, we found it to be above average for motion isolation,
